Paul Morphy is widely considered to be one of the purest chess geniuses in history, with a fabulous ability to attack with combinative wizardry. Bobby Fischer regarded him to be the "most accurate" player in history. The segment covers Morphy's birth in New Orleans, his games as a child prodigy, the Inaugural American Chess Congress of 1857, and his departure for England in 1858.

Mar 2, 2010 - This chess film is dedicated to Travis Bickle, who told me to make it, to Sony Magellan, who inspired me to make podcasts, and to KalkiAwaits for his amazing chess history films. All pictures courtesy of GOOGLE IMAGES, and thanks to Bill Wall and David Lawson for their great Morphy biographies.

Mar 6, 2010 - Great sketches of the Morphy relatives I wonder who sketched them and from what photograph. Morphy was perhaps the greatest of them all.

Apr 16, 2010 - Love the collection of images. good work. good research. The production quality blows to be honest. Windows movie maker is shit... and so is the font used. I mean hey its whatever, interesting mindset on what you find interesting. Its entertaining to me because I love retro shit but a simple upgrade in how you put it together would push such videos to be a bit less painful.

chingisbold Says:
May 28, 2010 - ah hah WTF. HOw come that was drawn at 3 ;36? that is so funny.:)
jessicafischerqueen Says:
May 28, 2010 - @chingisbold That endgame at 3:36 wasn't drawn, it was an easy win for Morphy. That's why it says "1-0" not "1/2 - 1/2"
sharpnova2 Says:
Jun 1, 2010 - Why no narration?
jessicafischerqueen Says:
Jun 1, 2010 - @sharpnova2 I prefer the aesthetic of a "silent film"- I'd rather let the music do the talking for me. I know you can talk while the music is playing, but it tends to "break the mood." These videos are meant to be more aesthetic than informative.
jessicafischerqueen Says:
Jun 1, 2010 - @tomthumbtoo There was no time limit per game in that Match- but by the time Steinitz hit the scene they started to use chess clocks and time limits. The first chess clocks were sand glasses.
